My friend and I had been spearfishing and free diving for 3 years when we went out with rob and he expanded our knowledge tenfold. My only regret is that I did not have more days to spend learning and hunting with his and his service. My wife and I had a fabulous day with Rob learning the basics of spear fishing and free diving safety. The class gave my wife and I more confidence with free diving and knowledge of what can go wrong and how to keep yourselves safe while free diving and spear fishing.
Thanks Rob! If you are reading this review, you are probably searching for spearfishing, blue water hunting or just a unique adventure on the Big Island. Well look no further, you found all of these and more with Rob, owner of Blue Water Hunters Rob is the last of dying breed, a master of his craft, a true GURU and just a really good guy.
Rob is beyond knowledgeable and intensely passionate about what he does.

I have gone out with Rob twice now over my visits to Big Island. First adventure was blue water hunting and second for a free diving class. Never in my life would I think I would go blue water spearfishing. I returned to Big Island specifically to go back out with Rob. This time I took a free diving class to further my skills after being inspired by the blue water trip. If I lived on the island I would do weekly classes with Rob.
I doubled my breath hold time, learned a ton about free diving, expanded my safety protocol and learned about fish behavior.
I will return again and am counting my days until I can go back out with Rob. If you are an experienced spearfisher or have zero experience and are just someone who loves the sea and enjoys a good adventure, THIS is for you. Rob of Blue Water Hunters is a star experience.
The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Oahu
I have done several deep water spearfishing trips, but this one tops them all. Rob is just not some guide you hire, who might help you come across a fish to shoot. He is first and foremost a hunter, which set's him apart from other guides.

I grew up hunting deer in Michigan and I had always compared deep water spearfishing to that sport. Rob not only confirmed that, but built onto that practical knowledge and understanding. He gave me a free diving tip on an easy way to look behind you while on top of the water, that no guide has ever shown me. We swam with a pod of whales and hunted two different buoy locations.
While we were unsuccessful on the first buoy, the second one had 4 Mahi Mahi in the area. Rob communicated that one was a "Bull", also known as the male of the species and it had 3 females with him. He was focused on getting the Bull.
We jumped in the water up current and floated down to the buoy. Sure enough, the Bull was there, curious at what we were doing there.

As the Bull approached, Rob continued to coach me to ensure I would make the shot. My heart was pounding as it approached directly at me. Aiming for a "headshot", I squeezed the trigger and scored a direct hit, so exciting and and what an incredible experience. Looking forward to my next trip with Rob in the fall when I come back to the Big Island.
